Mélomane Monday: Steve Angello & AN21

Saturday night, I had the great (& very exciting) honor to hear AN21 & Steve Angello spin at Avalon in Hollywood. What an amazing experience it was to be in the presence of two very talented brother DJs. 🙂 AN21 spun till about 1am, where he turned over the floor to his big brother Steve Angello. As I was only there till 3 am, the music was unbelievable…& the nite was filled with lots of dancing OF COURSE. There’s something to be said about DJs that are truly passionate and dedicated to their work. Their love of music is easily translated to the audience & that connection between the musician and their adoring fans is genuine and untouchable. This happened last nite.  The post for today will feature my favorite songs/remixes from Saturday night, as well as a couple others I felt like throwing in. If you have a chance to see Steve Angello & AN21 live, I would more than recommend doing so! All I have to say is that I’m waiting to see Swedish House Mafia do a show in LA! (If you want to see some of the videos I took on Saturday nite, go to my Youtube Channel DJDLish22.

This is Not A Love Song

Most of the time when writing new posts, something unique has to inspire me. I want to write based on my  own experiences. I want to share with you how I see and experience the world through music. Sometimes I’m happy, sometimes I’m sad, and sometimes I’m confused. I believe the rawest human emotions, whatever they may be, are ones that can be embodied in music. This concept remains important to me as I listen to songs… not merely for their musical quality and originality, but for the story they tell, and the emotions they evoke through their lyrics. I do admit I am a romantic… and even though it is not quite Valentine’s Day yet (yes I’ll do a sappy post for that), I want February to be a month of LOVE. Young love, old love, romantic love, friendly love, sibling love, family love, pet love, and of course most importantly… love of yourself. The song selection for today is a little random (kind of how I’ve been feeling when it comes to love and emotion the past couple of weeks), but I’m sure you will enjoy.

Dragonette – Pick Up the Phone (Van She Remix)

Pick up the phone Pick up the phone Congratulations I’m having visions of us
Breaking everything on our way outta town Were going places you’ve never dreamed of

Florence + The Machine – Hardest of Hearts

There is love in your body but you can’t get it out It gets stuck in your head, won’t come out of your mouth
Sticks to your tongue and it shows on your face that The sweetest of words have the bitterest taste

Erik Hassle and Ellie Goulding – Be Mine (Robyn Cover)

It’s a cruel thing you’ll never know all the ways I tried It’s a hard thing faking a smile when I feel like I’m falling apart inside
And now you’re gone it’s like an echo in my head And I remember every word you said

Flight Facilities – Crave You

La Roux – Quicksand (Boy 8-bit Remix)

You’re the upsetter Stroking my hand What’s my position?
I don’t understand Am I your possession? Am I in demand?
Oh when you turn to me I’m in the Quicksand

Nouvelle Vague – This is Not a Love Song

La Roux – In For the Kill (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey Remix)

They say we can love who we trust
Oooh but what is love without lust?
Two hearts with accurate devotions
Oooh but what are feelings without emotions?

I’m going in for the kill
I’m doing it for a thrill
I’m hoping you’ll understand
And not let go of my hand

In for the kill or in for the killing?

As I was going through my long list of daily blogs, I came across a song by one of my new favorite artists: La Roux. I’m sure many of you have heard of La Roux (hopefully) and agree that this electro pop duo’s songs and lyrics can truly speak to you. La Roux’s “In For the Kill” (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey Remix) has a steady pulse-like rhythm (the remix name suggests a club vibe- which it’s not) that allows you to concentrate on singer Elly Jackson’s smooth vocals.

This post may be a little longer than the others because I wanted to discuss the lyrics of this song. Here are some of the lyrics:

We can fight our desires
But when we start making fires
We get ever so hot
Whether we like it or not
They say we can love who we trust
But what is love without lust?
Two hearts with accurate devotions
And what are feelings without emotions?

I’m going in for the kill
I’m doing it for a thrill
Oh I’m hoping you’ll understand
And not let go of my hand

I hang my hopes out on the line
Will they be ready for you in time
If you leave them out too long
They’ll be withered by this song
Full stops and exclamation marks
My words stumble before I start
How far can you send emotions?
Can this bridge cross the ocean?

This song had me thinking about relationships (yet again) and about a person exposing his or her emotions to someone else. As love is a risky endeavor and can often be one sided, the vulnerability and lack of reciprocation we feel when expressing ourselves could potentially injure our hearts. We always have the option though: reveal our genuine emotions without fear of rejection or keep these feelings to ourselves. Regardless of what we choose to do, we will either be going in for the kill to try and get what we want or in for the killing, as what or shall I say who we want, may not want us in return.
